Cheap DMR hotspot
Today, I posted a long-ish piece about an eBay purchase on my amateur radio blog. I had some challenges with this hotspot but finally got it working, more or less. Find the post at https://www.randomwire.us/p/testing-a-cheap-dmr-hotspot.
Right after posting this, one of my friends alerted me to the WPSD Project, a derivative of the Pi-Star software currently installed on my cheap hotspot. I’ve ordered some new microSD cards so I can give WPSD a try.
Later, after I did more research on the MMDVM hat, I discovered it was firmware locked by the maker. That is very limiting. After pondering that a bit, I decided to build a DMR hotspot from components. I sourced everything on Amazon so the $150 cost probably represents a maximum out-of-pocket cost for anyone wishing to do this. I’ll post about the project during assembly and testing, probably within two weeks.
I have been interested in the natural world since a very early age. My first career as a mining and exploration geologist took me around the world. In 1992, I began to focus on the conservation of natural resources. I enjoy sailing, working with WordPress and Linux, and amateur radio. It probably goes without saying that I also like to travel!
