Executive Director work never stops
One of the most interesting things about serving as executive director of a statewide nonprofit group is the simple fact that the work never seems to stop. Nights, weekends, holidays: someone always needs something, and many people choose to start at the top of the org chart.
At first, I was honored to be called when people needed help. After a few years of this, I began to resent it a little bit. Now, I just accept that this is the way the community I serve chooses to behave.
I have done some things to modify behaviors, but at the end of the day, my job is not only about leadership but about service. I choose to be a servant leader.
I have been interested in the natural world since a very early age. My first career as a mining and exploration geologist took me around the world. In 1992, I began to focus on the conservation of natural resources. I enjoy sailing, working with WordPress and Linux, and amateur radio. It probably goes without saying that I also like to travel!
