Deb12 On 3040

It took 24 hours to get an AllStar node configured

Yesterday, I tried to configure an AllStarLink (ASL) node on a Debian 12 Linux base. This is unusual because ASL’s official base runs on Debian 10.

Debian 10 was released in July 2019. Debian 11 was released in August 2021. Debian 12 was released this year in June. I want to run my node on a Debian 12 base because it is purported to be more secure than older versions. But it isn’t officially supported.

So yesterday, I loaded Deb 12 on a Dell Wyse 3040 thin client computer and had trouble getting it configured to my liking. I finally set it aside and went to bed.

Today, I started from scratch and succeeded in getting Deb 12 on the 3040 and then installing and configuring ASL. The road was a bit bumpier than I expected it would be. You can read the details at my Random Wire blog.

Tonight, I’m brain tired. Deb 12 with ASL was a slog. Tomorrow I can focus on my day job and maybe bask in the glow of conquering this little project.
