An old server will be here soon

Well, I did it, I bought an old full-size computer. While the processor is no longer modern, it should be strong enough for the purposes I’ll use the computer for.

I’ve purchased an Unraid license so that I can convert the computer to a network-attached storage box. I also purchased a Windows 11 Pro license to make sure I can run it as a Windows box.

Meanwhile, I also bought a used Synology DS-220+ 2-drive NAS with two 3-terabyte hard drives. This will be a secondary storage device, and eventually I can upsize the hard drives with new ones.

What I posted on Mastodon at https://mastodon.radio/@kj7t/111959475369736683:

Putting together a server (that may become a NAS) on the cheap. Purchased a Lenovo ThinkStation P510 with 64 Gb RAM and a couple of drives. Ordered a few 2.5″ to 3.5″ drive trays and SATA cables. Also ordered a 4 Tb SSD and if it works as I expect, I’ll double down on that. Currently debating whether to keep the box running Win 11 Pro, convert to Debian (preferred), or install Unraid (purchased). Many options.

The SSD arrived today, along with the SATA cables. The ThinkStation should arrive on Saturday. I’ll add the SSD to the ThinkStation and see how it runs.

UPDATE, March 2024: The ThinkStation is running well. I left the software at Windows 11 Pro Workstation. The 4-terabyte SSD is humming along. I’m backing up the ThinkStation files to an older Synology DS220+ network attached storage unit. I did increase the RAM in the DS220+ to 6 gigabytes total and that really smoothed out the performance.
